/ TOP THINGS TO KNOW

New Democratic congressional majorities provide an opportunity to advance broad federal marijuana reform, advocates say—with expected incoming House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) having previously teamed up on a bill to legalize cannabis.

U.S. Sen.-elect James Talarico (D-TX) says he plans to work with President Donald Trump to federally legalize marijuana.

  • “I hope we can do that together and expunge the records of people who have been locked up for a crime that doesn’t hurt anybody.”

Pennsylvania is poised to legalize marijuana now that Democrats have claimed control of the state Senate in Tuesday’s elections while maintaining their existing majority in the House of Representatives.

  • “Now, the real work begins—and we’re ready to get shit done,” Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said.

Wisconsin could finally legalize marijuana for medical or even recreational use after voters in Tuesday’s elections gave control of the state legislature to Democrats while also installing a new pro-legalization governor from the party.

Iowa Gov.-elect Rob Sand (D) wants to legalize marijuana and use the revenue to help address the state’s budget issues—also saying that cannabis reform will make law enforcement’s job easier.
